There are no direct international flights that arrive in Port Blair currently and hence the easiest way for overseas tourists is to book an international flight that arrives in Chennai or Kolkata, India. Daily flights are operated by Kingfisher Airlines as well as Jet Airways and Air India too has daily regular flights into Port Blair from Kolkata and Chennai. The flying time is approximately 2 hours all flights land at the Vir Savarkar airport in Port Blair. Flight tickets can be purchased online through the following sites.

When you arrive in Port Blair, don’t expect a huge airport with posh lounges and duty free shopping. The Veer Savarkar airport is small and its facilities are very minimal. Numerous taxis and auto rickshaws are available as you exit the terminal to take you to your hotel or ferry boarding point. Ensure you agree on a price beforehand to avoid long arguments.

Ships ply between the mainland and Port Blair, with departures from Kolkata, Visakhapatnam and Chennai. Tickets for the ships must be booked in advance and the 3-day journey can be difficult and arduous given the basic amenities on board. .

Tourists can choose between the slower Government ferry and the faster new Catamaran (called Makruzz) depending on their arrival time in Port Blair as well as their budget restraints.

* Makruzz does not generally sail in the months between June – Sept and its sailing is subject to sea conditions. Being a two hull boat, it does experience some serious rolling and pitching and hence is best avoided during these months. You can only board the Makruzz from Port Blair to Havelock if you are taking the early morning flight which lands latest by 0730 hrs since Makruzz departure is at 0900 hrs from Port Blair jetty.

Ferries arriving from Port Blair dock at the Havelock Jetty on Beach No.1. Barefoot at Havelock is located at Beach No.7 which is roughly 11 Kms away. Several taxis and auto rickshaws are available right outside the jetty area. All drivers know where our resort is and given the fact that there is pretty much just one road leading to our resort there is absolutely no fear of getting lost along the way. Ensure that you haggle with the driver and arrive at a price that is mutually agreeable prior to getting into the taxi or rickshaw.

A holiday is where you put your feet up and avoid the hassles that you deal with on daily basis. In India, most foreign nationals are stumped and frustrated at the length of queues at ticket counters and the lack of discipline in maintaining the queue. Tickets for ferries can be extremely difficult to get and close to even impossible during the high season. Haggling with touts and taxi operators may leave you feeling harassed and annoyed. So don’t bother yourself with these nitty-gritties and leave it to us to organize your complete transfers professionally.

Barefoot offers to meet its guests at the Port Blair airport, transfer them to the Phoenix Bay jetty from which the ferries depart, organize ferry tickets to Havelock and transfers them from the Havelock jetty to the Barefoot at Havelock resort. On the return leg, we organize all car transfers, ferry tickets, hotel drop in Port Blair for the last night (mandatory) and airport drop in time for the return flight.

The duration for the Catamaran (MAKRUZZ) varies from 1.25 hrs to 1.5 hrs depending on the weather conditions. The ground transfers are in non air-conditioned vehicles. In case you would prefer an AC car (Note this service is only available in Port Blair and there are no AC cars in Havelock) kindly add a surcharge of Rs 800 to the above transportation costs.

The duration for the government ferry journey varies from 2.5 hrs to 4.5 hrs depending on the route being taken as well as the sea conditions. The costs of the ferry tickets are included in the above package.

Kindly note that the ferry timings can be changed by the government at short notice due to which you may not be able to board the ferry if it clashes with your flight timings. Despite our sincerest efforts to get any such information in advance and inform the same to you, we request your co operation and understanding should there be a last minute change as we have no control over the same. The management will not be held liable for any losses caused due to the change in these timings.

Please also note that on the return journey from Havelock, ferry tickets are not released in advance and we are sometimes allocated seats on the 1400 hrs ferry instead of the smaller, faster 1630 hrs one because of shortage of space and quotas. Although you may indicate a preference for the 1630 ferry on your return journey at the time of booking, and although it is our endeavour to place you on this ferry if you have expressed a preference for it, we request your understanding if this is not possible on the day. In such an eventuality, we will inform you of the same well in advance, by breakfast time on the morning of departure.

It is extremely difficult to arrange ferry tickets as there is a huge demand against the number of ferries and capacity operating on this circuit, hence even though you may get a ticket kindly note that we do not guarantee a sitting space on board and you may need to make the trip standing.

If you are travelling as part of a large group and would like your transfers to be as per your convenience, then Barefoot at Havelock offers its guests the option of taking a private transfer.

This way, you can relax, stay an extra night in Havelock, avoid the last night in Port Blair which is otherwise mandatory and leave the running around to us. It’s the perfect choice for the romantic couple as well as families traveling with kids in tow.

Cost for private boat transfer is Rs.35,000/- (One way + car transfers).

Kindly note that the Private Charter booked is made using an outsourced boat to offer a comfortable experience to our guests.

The Private boat can be cancelled at a short notice due weather conditions and we will try to keep the guests informed in advance about any changes.

In case of any mechanical/technical snag we will offer a refund on the boat and apply our normal transfer charges.

In a situation when a guest is returning from Havelock and has to stay at Port Blair due to sudden / unavoidable cancellation of the boat, we will not charge retention for the unused night at Barefoot and offer to book a Port Blair hotel the cost of which will be reduced from the refund offered for non- usage of the Private boat.

Though it will be our endeavour to ensure none of the above happens, due to limited availability of Private boats in a situation like above we request your co-operation towards the same.

Ferry timings from Havelock to Port Blair do not correlate with flight timings to mainland India, all tourists therefore must spend the last night in Port Blair. There is unfortunately no way around this.

All foreign nationals must have a valid Indian Visa to enter Port Blair.


All foreign nationals must ensure that their India Visa does NOT have a stamp that reads “Not valid for restricted areas” on it. Please contact the issuing visa authority before you travel and have a new visa issued to you in the event that it does have such a stamp. Should your visa have this stamp, you will be denied entry to the Andaman Islands.


On arrival, all foreign nationals are issued a Restricted Area Permit free of cost at the airport or port. The procedure is simple and takes about 20 minutes. The permit will allow you to stay for a period of 30 days only. This validity can be further extended in Port Blair or Havelock closer to the date of expiry by an additional 15 days provided you have proof of a return ticket. No further extensions are possible.


Foreign nationals wishing to stay longer must fly to mainland India and back to the islands again.


Indian Nationals do not require a passport or any special permit to visit the Andaman Islands. There is also no restriction on the duration of stay on the islands.
