The Andaman & Nicobar Islands are considered to be one of the world's unique and most important anthropological sites.
Visitors are allowed; no camera crews, no journalists, no scientists and no researchers. While the Nicobar Islands are completely out of bounds to tourists, it is also inappropriate, and in most cases illegal for tourists to seek out tribe members of the Andaman Islands and we strongly advise all visitors to the Andaman Islands to refrain from attempting to voluntarily seek contact or from participating in any tour itinerary that is designed to bring them in contact with any of the above mentioned tribal populations.
We at Barefoot have debated long hours over the merits and demerits of mentioning the anthropology of the Andaman Islands on our website – the downside being that the knowledge of their existence may encourage the stray visitor to our website to wish to venture in their direction. However, given the high level of basic awareness of the Andaman Islands and its aboriginals – independent of our website - amongst tourists to the Islands, Barefoot has chosen to retain this information on its website with a strong warning about the illegality and arguably the immorality of contact attempts by tourists.
